A few weeks after revealing details of their new album, Vampire Weekend have now released two brand new songs - Step and Diane Young.
Step harks back to the band’s infectious debut album Vampire Weekend, the song opening with down-tempo harpsichord, grooving percussion and Ezra Koenig’s gentle, cryptic mantras. Diane Young on the other hand is a punchy little number, kicking off with a squelching bassoon and a blend of rockabilly and new wave influences.
In an interview with members Rostam Batmanglij and Chris Baoi at Big Day Out this year the band suggested that the new album would go "a lot further, a lot deeper" than their previous records, Vampire Weekend and Contra.
"We wanted to whole record to feel like a complete statement," Rostam says. "We were trying to preserve the sound of a band in the songs. There's this feeling that everything [the sounds] are affecting each other, that compression that makes you feel the music right here (pats chest)." Watch the whole interview below.
Vampire Weekend's forthcoming third album will be called Modern Vampires Of The City and will be released on May 6 through XL Recordings. You can pre-order it and check out the album artwork here.
