The second trailer to Baz Luhrmann’s 3D re-imagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby was released recently and once again Jay-Z and Kanye West’s No Church In The Wild is the signature track. While many were conflicted over the use of modern hip hop in a film set in the 1920s, the haters are really gonna hate that Jay-Z has been confirmed to score the entire film.
Jay-Z will score the film along with a group call The Bullitts, which was confirmed by The Bullits posting this on Twitter:
“Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!”
This decision to include rap music for the 1920s isn’t all that bizarre considering Luhrmann’s track record, namely featuring the likes of The Cardigans’ Lovefool on Romeo + Juliet and basically reworking every love song ever made on Moulin Rogue!
The Great Gatsby was supposed to be in cinemas over Christmas, but was delayed. While Warner Bros official stated the delay is because the film is better suited to an American summer release date, many predict that given Luhrmann’s track record for pushing deadlines (he finished Australia a week before it was released), the movie just isn’t finished yet.
While the purists and high school English teachers may be outraged by what will definitely be a grandiose, ostentatious and far-fetched 3D reworking of one of the highest regarded commentaries on the American dream, we’re just a little bit excited to see if he can pull it off.
The Great Gatsby is scheduled for release in March. See below for the recently released second trailer featuring No Church In The Wild, Florence + The Machine's Bedroom Hymns and Filter's cover of Happy Together below.
