After partaking in one of Adelaide Central School Of Art's short courses, Michelle Jones was hooked.
“By the time the eight Friday afternoon painting sessions had finished, I had signed up for four years of full time study to obtain my degree.”
Michelle’s arts degree, combined with her addiction to paint, has seen her display work in various art exhibitions, most notably, the current Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition. It was there she won the Adelaide Art Society Award.
“I was really happy just to be selected as one of the graduates for the exhibition. Exhibiting with a talented group of artists is a great opportunity. I was surprised, flattered and encouraged.”
It was her dual narrative paintings, touching on environmental issues, that had the judges impressed.
“One story explores the materiality of paint, painting's historical legacy and its relationship with photography. The other narrative stems from the content of my paintings, thoughts about consumption, artificiality and man's manipulation of nature. I am a realist painter. I am an environmentalist. These two statements are essentially the foundation for my work.”
MIchelle plans to put her prize money to good use, “I'll be investing in some new paintbrushes”, which will come in handy when she creates a new body of work for an upcoming art exhibition at BMG Art.
Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition 2010 is on at Drill Hall, Torrens Parade Ground, King William Rd, Adelaide, until Sun Mar 14.
