BARRIO ANNOUNCES LATE NIGHT MUSIC LINE-UP

With March not far away it's time to get excited for Barrio, the new late night festival club opening at Hajek Plaza as part of the Adelaide Festival. Boasting a ‘shanty town’ of delicious eats, bars, merchants, dance floors and hang outs, now there’s even more incentive for you to come on down following the announcement of Barrio’s late night music line-up. Over 10 nights the venue will feature a host international and local performers from around the word with FREE entry including St Vincent, MEN, Mo’ Horizons, The Killgirls, Shaolin Afronauts and Graveyard Train.

Officially opening on Fri Mar 2, Barrio will offer a different theme each night over the weeks to compliment the performing acts. The free line-up joins the already stellar list of acts for 'Dreamers' program, which features international acts like Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Jane Birkin and The Black Lips.

Barrio has the capacity to hold 1,500 punters and one of its other highlights will certainly be the selection of food and drinks on offer. Combining the good tunes with the chaos of Hawkers markets, stallholders throughout the club will be dishing up Neon Lobster Mexican cantina and Argentinean BBQ plus a bevy of beverages from a “part volcano part bar” called Crack-at-o-a, an alpine ski bar, a tequila bar, a candy bar and more.

Do you think they're suggesting any particular social activity? Regardless, we're in. Check out the full line-up for Barrio's late night music program after the video.

Fri 2 Mar – Opening Night
Rock up in your best party frock and all you need to decide is which of the six different themed bars you should check out first. Our top picks are Gringo’s Tequila or Dusty Boots Bourbon Bar.
Free Late Night Music:
Grammy award-winning Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri (US/PUERTO RICO) and, for the first time in Adelaide, New York band Sway Machinery (US), who draw inspiration from members of Arcade Fire and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs producing a mix of blues guitar, afro beat, funk rhythms, sizzling brass and, yes, Jewish cantor.

Sat 3 Mar - Nerd Night
Whatever happened to Scratch & Sniff stickers? Turn up and hang out with the slightly obsessive or less social amongst us. Think Comics, Barbie Dolls, Atari and Weird Science.
Free Late Night Music:
New Zealand’s leading hip-hop/soul artist Ladi6 (NZ) and Donny Benet (AUS), son of 70’s accordion disco legend Giacomelli Benét. Donny wants to be the most famous disco accordion/Jazz bassist of the 21st century and we reckon he is in with a shot.

Sun 4 Mar - Old Spice Night
For express entry into this 70’s Swingers’ heaven, wear your safari suit, pink shorts or muumuu.
Free Late Night Music:
Sultry, ballsy soul from Stella Angelico (AUS) and Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective MEN (US), known for energetic live performances and innovative dance music. Including DJ set from JD Samson (AUS) Le Tigre/MEN.

Thurs 8 Mar - Beard Night
Who doesn’t love a good beard? Tonight you can take the opportunity to mix with some special guests: Ned Kelly, Father Christmas, John Lennon and Albus Dumbledore.
Free Late Night Music:
You guessed it: Adelaide folk-rock band The Beards (AUS) perform songs about just one subject, while pianist Matt Herskowitz Trio (US) will perform jazz pieces with a touch of classical and Jewish influence.

Fri 9 Mar - Covers & Copies
Bring your mix tapes and stolen goods, and expect some pale imitations. Turn up tonight if you think you will enjoy a fallen off the back of the lorry, cash-only kind of atmosphere.
Free Late Night Music:
Local legends Track Team (AUS) play their full set and The Raah Project (AUS) mess around with established concepts of jazz, electronica, hip hop, dance and soul music.

Sat 10 Mar - Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Come to the party that’s a shameless homage to modes of transport and a massive excuse to celebrate a certain John Candy movie. You will leave asking ‘is it ok for adults to play with toy cars?’
Free Late Night Music:
The Mexicali Mammas (AUS), Chiquita and Anamaria, combine their multiple artistic and musical talents and their overwhelming obsessions for all things vintage and Mexican. Followed by  Abbie Cardwell & The Chicano Rockers and Max Savage & The False Idols.

Sun 11 Mar - Best in Show Night
Jam, homing pigeons, carnies, vegetables and wood chopping: Barrio brings the best of the best to you tonight.
Free Late Night Music:
La Voce Della Luna (AUS/ITALY) a sassy 40+ strong choir of women sing traditional Italian classics and folk songs while Hanover-based producer-DJ Ralf Droesemeyer’s Mo’Horizons (GER) serves up a cocktail of bossa nova, soul and boogaloo.

Thurs 15 Mar - Something Blue
Wear your tweed & vintage and bring something blue (why not?).
Free Late Night Music:
Shaolin Afronauts (AUS) bring back the deep grooves and avant-garde jazz flavour of Sun Ra and Fela Kuti and Australia’s top funk record expert DJ Chris Gill (AUS) will keep you dancing all night.

Fri 16 Mar - DIY Party
We cant be expected to come up with a plan for every night at Barrio, perhaps its time you chipped in, you know what you have to do – be resourceful..
Free Late Night Music:
St Vincent (US) presents a show that will be pure, luscious, packed with indelible hooklines and ingenious rhythm parts, not to mention debonair solos. Mikelangelo & the Tin Star featuring Saint Clare (AUS) is inspired by a love of 50’s and 60’s instrumental guitar music and Western cinema soundtracks. Even if you don’t ride high in the saddle this band will make you twist, swagger and crack a crooked gun-slinging smile.

Sat 17 Mar - End of the World Party
It’s the end of the world and the end of Barrio. You better make the most of it…
Free Late Night Music:
Five-piece rocktronic timebomb The Killgirls (AUS) and Graveyard Train (AUS), six men who sing in baritone about Werewolves, Vampires, Ghosts and the like over frenetic foot stomping country music.

Barrio will take place from Mar 2 - 18 on the Hajek Plaza next to Adelaide Festival Theatre on King William Rd, Adelaide. All ticketing and event information can be found on the Adelaide Festival website here.
