Despite the grey weather the launch of the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Program was anything but dark as bright colours and even brighter Fringe stars such as Hans and Lucky Sam launched next year’s program with Fringe Director Greg Clarke (pictured). Themed as a tour of the unexpected, next year’s Adelaide Fringe will host 923 events with 250 comedians, 130 theatre shows and 100 art and design exhibitions taking over Adelaide from Fri Feb 24 until Sun Mar 18.
The 2012 program has grown by 20 percent since 2011 with 100 international acts bound for Adelaide including Stephen K Amos, The Byrds’ Chris Hillman, Ross Noble, Canadian film and TV stars Trailer Park Boys and Tina C. Token will be bringing big name Australian comedians such as Frank Woodley, Sam Simmons, Judith Lucy and Charlie Pickering. You can check the Garden Of Unearthly Delights’ line-up, which includes Kate Miller-Heidke, Sammy J & Randy and Wil Anderson here. There will be more than 325 venues throughout the city hosting Fringe events, which will begin on Fri Feb 24 with the Fringe Parade.
The launch was hosted by Lucky Sam with the Wheatsheaf Ukulele Collective going unplugged (yeah, we know you probably can’t really go that electric with a uke) with their version of Smells Like Teen Spirit while Katie Wright juggled swords to the Nirvana classic. Hans as well as Gady La La also provided entertainment.
Next year’s Fringe will see the whole CBD utilised with free buses taking punters on a literal tour of the unexpected with Fringe hosts and performers. Continuing the touring and transport theme, the Fringe Caravan will be back in Rundle Mall and festivals such as the Street Theatre Festival and The Spirit Festival will also return.
The Adelaide Fringe runs from Fri Feb 24 to Sun Mar 18. Tickets for the Fringe go on sale through the Adelaide Fringe site at 9am on Mon Dec 12. The program and tickets will be available to view on the Adelaide Fringe website in the coming days.
