Triple J's Hottest 100 by the numbers

It was the biggest Hottest 100 ever with more than 130,000 voters and over 1 million votes cast. And with 4,100 parties celebrating the countdown across the globe, it probably had its largest listening audience ever as well. But were you happy with the results? Rip It Up Digital dissects the information and gives you some proper analysis of what went down.

Big Winners
First of all, a big congratulations is in order for London's Mumford & Sons, whose song Little Lion Man topped the chart by a record margain. Even though they were leaked online as the winners a few days before the event, it was a nice surprise having them perform their number one song live in the Triple J studio.

But there were others who enjoyed solid success yesterday, including newcomer Florence & The Machine and Hottest 100 mainstays Muse, who each scored four songs in the chart. They were closely followed by British indie rockers Kasabian, new Aussie sensations The Temper Trap and New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo Flight of the Conchords, who all squeezed three songs into the countdown.

Australia Day?
Because the Hottest 100 is held every year on our national day, there are usually a lot of Aussie songs that make their way in. Breaking down the artists into nationality, we see that trend continuing. Australia had the most number of entries into the 2009 Hottest 100 (36%), followed by the UK (29%), the US (23%), Canada (4%), France and Italy both with 2% and Sweden propping up the tail with its solo entrant, Miike Snow and their song Animal (#53 in the chart).

Genre specific
It's always interesting to see what kinds of music Triple J listeners are digging at any given point and the Hottest 100 presents us with just such an opportunity. Dividing the music in this year's poll into the six (very broad) musical styles of indie/pop, rock/metal, dance/electronic, hip hop, acoustic/folk and punk/hardcore gives us an idea of what the public is listening to. Note however that many songs and artists overlap in genre (eg is Dizzee dance or hip hop?). So in these cases, we just went with the more obvious style.

Coming as no surprise, the indie/pop genre dominated the poll in 2009, with the likes of Vampire Weekend, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lily Allen helping to make up 47% of the list. Those in the dance/electronic field (your La Roux's, your Bloody Beetroots, etc.) came next with 22% of the takings, followed by acoustic/folk with 12%, good old fashioned rock & roll with 10% and hip hop notching up 8% of the poll. NOFX were the only punk band to make it in, with their parody song Creeping Out Sara at #88.

Old & New
The Hottest 100 always highlights the bright young stars making their names in this business and this year's was no different. Of the 71 artists who got ino this year's poll, 30 were making an appearance for the very first time.

Top Ten
And for those who missed out on the action yesterday, here's the top ten of the 2009 Hottest 100:

1) Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man
2) Art Vs Science - Parlez Vous Francais?
3) Hilltop Hoods - Chase That Feeling
4) Phoenix - Lisztomania
5) Bluejuice - Broken Leg
6) La Roux - Bulletproof
7) Lisa Mitchell - Coin Laundry
8) Lily Allen - Not Fair
9) Muse - Uprising
10) Florence & The Machine - Dog Days Are Over

So what did you think of the 2009 Hottest 100? Are Mumford & Sons worthy winners? Do you think Flight of the Conchords should be considered formusic polls such as these?
