Jay Reatard dies aged 29

The Memphis-born punk rocker was found dead at his home in Midlake overnight (Wed Jan 13). The cause of death is unknown.

Known for his hard-edged lo-fi garage rock style and unpredictable nature, Jay Reatard (real name Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr.) has died in his sleep.

2009 was a tumultuous year for Lindsey, who played at last year's Laneway Festivals to rave reviews. He released his debut album proper Watch Me Fall, earning worldwide critical acclaim before sacking his band midway through a tour in October.

Lindsey's record label Matador have released the following statement in lieu of his death: "We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we’ve ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We’re honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly.”
