It's big news in the music world when Lady Gaga comes out with a new video. Born This Way, just released on the internet, might not be the best clip she's ever put out but it's got all the razzle dazzle we've come to expect. Also out this weeks are new clips from The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys and Gossling
Music Video Of The Week
LADY GAGA - BORN THIS WAY (INTERSCOPE/UMA)
I get Lady Gaga’s deal. I get the whole boundary-pushing artistry of her get-up. I get that she’s some sort of brightly coloured beacon in a sea of pop monotony. Hell, I even get some of her music. What I don’t get is why she has to be half-naked all the time. It’s like she has to drum up controversy in order to get her point across. And that’s just lame. The best parts of new video for Born This Way are when she’s covering up: her tuxedo skeleton costume or crystal goddess outfit. Everything else kind of cheapens it. But it’s still yet another amazing video for the pop icon.

Best Of The Rest
THE STROKES - UNDER COVER OF DARKNESS (SONY)
In the massive build-up to their fourth album Angles, The Strokes have released a…let’s call it ‘safe’ first single in Under Cover Of Darkness. It’s hard to get much of a feel for Angles from this track but the video might have a clue or two. Notice it starts with a few snippets from the clip to You Only Live Twice, signalling some sort of transformation or re-birth. Notice too that Julian Casablancas constantly sits on his own or apart from the rest of the band, just like he apparently did when the band were recording the album. Maybe I’m looking into it too much but I just get the feeling Angles won't have the punch of previous Strokes efforts.

ARCTIC MONKEYS - BRICK BY BRICK (DOMINO/EMI)
This is a bit of a shocker. Out of nowhere Arctic Monkeys have released new single Brick By Brick and this accompanying video on their website. It features very long shots of a record spinning on a turntable and awesome Los Angeles city and coastal scapes. No news on a new album yet, although the video does reveal the track was recorded by long-time collaborator James Ford at LA’s Sunset Sound Studio’s, where the band had previously confirmed they would be making their next album. Stay tuned.
GOSSLING - I WAS YOUNG (INDEPENDENT)
It’s gonna be a showdown…with donuts! Pistols at high noon…with bubbles! It’s a Mexican stand-off…with balloons! Maybe the dramatic intro to this clip from Melbourne songstress Gossling, aka Helen Croome, isn’t quite as foreboding as it seems. Turns out this lot are just the world’s best children’s entertainers. I’ll take Helen Croome over Peter Combe any day of the week.
