As if things couldn't get any weirder in camp Deez, the left-field pop figurehead has just released a free digital mixtape by the name of Wonky Beats. The compilation features rap stars Dev Hynes (Lightspeed Champion), KOOL AD (Das Racist) and Chiddy Bang and is comprised solely of samples taken from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. Pretty wonky indeed.
It's a pretty bold and ambitious project to undertake following a year making your name as an indie pop star, but then again Darwin Deez is pretty bold and ambitious. Describing Wonky Beats as "the Grey Album with chocolate", Darwin says working with the music from the iconic children's movie is something he's always thought about doing.
"I just really love the songs," he says. "Really special melodies and chords. Thought they'd make good hip hop choruses. Limitations give me the freedom to feel ok about whatever comes out because I can always blame the limitations. But the secret is to get the faucet running in the first place otherwise I am just too serious and too scared to write anything."
You can download the Wonky Beats mixtape for free from Darwin Deez's website. Or you can have a listen to one of the tracks Where's The Chocolate? below.
